This four-star hotel occupies the former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line, where passengers once boarded ships bound for New York. The Art Deco details are everywhere, from the stunning lobby ceiling to the original brass fixtures, but it never feels like a museum. Instead, there’s this perfect balance between honoring the past and creating something genuinely contemporary.

Location & Getting Around

You really can’t beat the location at Jernbanetorget — I mean, you’re literally steps from Oslo Central Station, which makes arriving with luggage almost too easy. But here’s what I love about this spot: while you’re right in the thick of things, the hotel itself feels like a quiet refuge from the bustle. The Opera House is just a short walk away, and you can easily stroll to Aker Brygge or the fortress without breaking a sweat. Plus, having the train station so close means day trips to places like Drammen or even Bergen are totally doable.

The Room Experience

The rooms here strike this nice balance between maritime heritage and modern comfort. My room had these gorgeous porthole-style windows that reminded me of the building’s ship-line origins, but the bed was pure contemporary comfort — seriously comfortable. The bathrooms are sleek without being cold, and there’s plenty of space to spread out your stuff. What I appreciated most was the attention to lighting; you’ve got options for every mood, whether you’re trying to work or just unwind after exploring the city.

Dining & Social Spaces

The ground-floor restaurant and bar area is where this place really comes alive. The restaurant serves this elevated Nordic cuisine that doesn’t feel pretentious — just really good food that makes sense for the setting. But honestly, I spent most of my evenings in the bar area, which has this wonderful buzz without being overwhelming. The cocktails lean into the maritime theme without going overboard (pun intended), and the bartenders actually know their stuff. There’s also a more casual café space that’s perfect for morning coffee or afternoon meetings.

What sets Amerikalinjen apart is how it manages to feel both historic and completely current. Couples particularly seem to love this place — and I get why. There’s something romantic about the whole maritime story, plus the location makes it easy to explore Oslo together without feeling rushed. The service hits that sweet spot of being attentive without hovering, and the staff genuinely seems to enjoy sharing local recommendations. You know what really impressed me though? Even during busy periods, the hotel never felt chaotic or overcrowded. It’s the kind of place where you can have a genuine Oslo experience while staying somewhere that feels special in its own right.

  I liked everything about this property – starting with the friendly & helpful staff. My room was comfortable, the hotel was centrally located, they offer cappuccinos at breakfast (not a self serve coffee machine), saunas were wonderful, and did I mention the wonderful staff??! I don’t take that last one for granted as it can definitely affect the trip. Each and every person – especially Katarina at the restaurant – was warm & friendly & helpful.
