Grand Hotel Oslo Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Grand Hotel Oslo feels like stepping into Norwegian royalty — and honestly, that’s not an exaggeration. This five-star property sits right on Karl Johans gate, which means you’re literally in the middle of everything that matters in Oslo. I mean, you can see the Royal Palace from some windows, and the main pedestrian street is right at your doorstep. The lobby has this old-world elegance that somehow doesn’t feel stuffy — marble columns, crystal chandeliers, but with a distinctly Scandinavian restraint that keeps it from being over the top.

Prime Location Benefits

You know what’s brilliant about staying here? You can walk to basically everything worth seeing in Oslo without breaking a sweat. The National Theatre is a two-minute stroll, the harbor and Aker Brygge are maybe ten minutes on foot, and if you’re into shopping, the main drag is literally outside your door. Couples absolutely love this spot — they rate the location 9.7 out of 10, and after staying here, I totally get why. There’s something romantic about being able to wander back to your hotel after dinner without dealing with taxis or figuring out public transport (though Oslo’s transit is actually pretty great).

The Rooms

The room I stayed in was spacious by European standards, with these gorgeous high ceilings and windows that actually open — a small luxury you don’t always get in modern hotels. The beds here are seriously comfortable; guests consistently rave about getting excellent sleep, and I can vouch for that personally. The decor strikes this perfect balance between classic luxury and Scandinavian minimalism — rich fabrics and elegant furniture without the clutter. The bathrooms are marble-clad and well-appointed, though some of the fixtures show the hotel’s heritage (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you appreciate character over ultra-modern everything).

Dining and Amenities

The breakfast buffet is honestly one of the better hotel spreads I’ve encountered in Scandinavia. They do the full Norwegian treatment — fresh salmon, various herring preparations, excellent cheeses, and really good bread alongside the usual international options. The main restaurant serves solid Nordic cuisine, though you’re spoiled for choice with the neighborhood’s dining scene right outside. There’s parking available on-site, which is actually a big deal in central Oslo where street parking can be a nightmare and expensive to boot.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both grand and genuinely Norwegian. The service has that Scandinavian efficiency — professional without being overly formal or fussy. You’re staying in a piece of Oslo’s history (the hotel dates back to 1874), but with all the modern comforts you’d expect from a luxury property. The location score of 9.7 isn’t just numbers on a page — it translates to being able to experience Oslo like a local rather than a tourist shuttling between distant attractions. Whether you’re here for business or pleasure, you’ll find yourself perfectly positioned to make the most of this beautiful Nordic capital.

Location is just incredible! Breakfast is top! One of the best I ever had in the hotels. The bar in lobby is amazing – very professional bartenders, nice conversation! Also you will meet interesting people in this hotel for sure. Was super fun!

  • Zarnigar from United Kingdom (7/10)

    Great location

  • Richard from United Kingdom (7/10)

The fantastic staff upgraded us to a much more modern and larger room. The bathroom was well designed, and elegant. The bed, the main reason for being in a hotel, was dreadful, the mattress was way too soft offering no support. The duvet didn’t fit the bed.

  • David from United Kingdom (8/10)

Staff were incredibly attentive, knowledgeable and accommodating whilst helping us find a bar and food on NYE in a city that doesn't stay open!
Rubina the Concierge, the bar manager (whose name we didn't get) and the FOH team were all amazing

  • Amrita from United Arab Emirates (8/10)

Perfectly located in the heart of buzzing shopping district. Most of the attractions are walking distance away. The decor of the hotel is tastefully done. Room size are large. Certainly gives a grand welcome.
